For Mikayla and her family, life changed the day Caprice joined their world in April 2017. In that time, Caprice has become an irreplaceable member of the family through her training as a seizure alert dog and as a caring companion.
“Our life is complete with Caprice,” says Mikayla’s mom, Missy. “Mikayla has been able to attend school and engage in more social opportunities because of the safety having Caprice by her side brings.”
Caprice isn’t just a source of protection, she’s a constant companion, giving Mikayla comfort at home, in the community, and even during extended hospital stays. “There are many times Mikayla has been in the hospital for extended times that Caprice has not only kept her company, brought her comfort, but also alerted her medical team when they need to check on her or be on guard,” Missy shares. “She brings us all peace of mind that there is another set of eyes and a nose on Mikayla. Her eyes and nose are so much better than ours anyway.”
Caprice has also helped Mikayla connect socially. At school, she’s become the incredible girl with the amazing dog. “Caprice has opened up Mikayla’s world socially in school because the girl with the dog gets a lot of sweet attention,” says Missy.

Whether they’re living out an ordinary day, navigating hospital hallways, or even enjoying the magic of Disney World, Caprice is by Mikayla’s side. Her tasks, like detecting seizures, alerting caregivers, and helping with mobility, are critical. But her companionship is just as powerful.
“Mikayla’s life is better because of Caprice,” Missy says. “All of our lives are better because of Caprice… not just because of the safety she brings by detecting her seizures and letting us know, or by opening doors and picking up items, but by the companionship she provides all of us during difficult times. She is a member of our family.”
Caprice is more than a service dog. She’s Mikayla’s guardian, her best friend, and her bridge to a fuller life.
