“I love capturing special moments that otherwise may not get seen.” | Beverly’s Story

Some moments in life define us, but the most special ones deserve to be remembered forever. Our walls echo those moments every month when each new service dog class arrives on campus before graduating ten days later.

Without Beverly, those memories may be lost only in the minds of those who were there. As a volunteer, Beverly can be found taking our class pictures on the first day & graduation day, capturing the start of so many 4 Paws journeys.

For Beverly, her journey started in 2009 when her family was first introduced to 4 Paws for Ability.

“We got involved with 4 Paws when my son applied to get an autism assistance dog back in 2009. While we waited, we began fostering. Our first dog was Cammy and then our second one was Atticus.”

Then, in December 2010, Mercy arrived. She wasn’t just a dog; she was a lifeline, and a bridge to a world that had once felt overwhelming.

“She changed our lives and gave my son the confidence he needed to venture more outside of our home. Because of our service dog Mercy, he discovered that he loved to travel! We can literally say that we went from coast to coast with her and shared so many memories that we wouldn’t have had otherwise.”

Beverly’s love for the mission of 4 Paws only grew from there. Over the years, she has fostered and trained eleven puppies—each one unique, each one teaching her something new about patience, resilience, and unconditional love.

“I have been a puppy raiser/volunteer trainer for many years. We are currently on our eleventh dog. During that time, I am proud to say that seven dogs have become service dogs, one client companion, one breeder, and one career changer. I can definitely say that they’ve given me back more than I have given.”

“While every dog I’ve had has been wonderful in their own way, probably my favorite of all time was Daniel. He was the sweetest and probably the easiest one I’ve ever worked with. He also came into our lives during the time that we had to say goodbye to our own service dog. His gentle, loving cuddles helped mend our broken hearts in a way that no other dog could have.”

Photography became another way for Beverly to give back. Since 2014, she has captured the raw, emotional, and transformative moments of families meeting their service dogs for the first time.

“Photographing the classes is so uplifting, and also brings back those wonderful memories of when we first got our dog. I love the artistic aspect of photography, but especially capturing special moments that otherwise may not get seen.”

It’s not just about the dogs for Beverly, it’s about the families, the lives changed, and the love shared.

“When we went through our class, there wasn’t a designated photographer so we don’t have many pictures of that first meeting. It’s hard for a parent to be able to capture the pictures and also focus on the moment at hand. I always wished that we would’ve had a class photographer.”

Through 4 Paws, Beverly has met incredible people, fostered unbreakable bonds, and found immeasurable fulfillment. As she looks back on this journey, she knows one thing for certain: the dogs may have learned from her, but they have given her far more in return.

“All the classes are so unique, but I think the classes where the veterans get their dogs are extra special. It’s wonderful to know that we are giving back to people who have given so much for us! I have enjoyed volunteering with 4 Paws so much. I have met so many truly wonderful people along the way, and it feels good to be part of something that helps so many.”

Because of Beverly’s dedication, the heart of 4 Paws for Ability isn’t just felt—it’s seen, captured, and remembered for years to come.
