If you are ever near the Greater Dayton School, you may see a four-legged classmate greeting drivers passing by, and students as they step off the bus and into their classrooms.
Wave is not your average dog; he’s a beloved staff member at The Greater Dayton School, bringing comfort, joy, and motivation to students and staff alike. Under the guidance of his handler, Kendra Stitch, Wave has seamlessly integrated into daily school life, playing a vital role in fostering emotional well-being and creating a positive atmosphere.
“I am looking forward to petting and hugging Wave and for Wave to lick and fist bump me.”
-Dillian, 3rd grade
Wave’s role as a school dog is multifaceted. As Kendra, a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) teacher, explains, Wave spends most of his time with her in sessions focused on reading and math interventions. For students, having Wave nearby adds an element of excitement and encouragement. “Kids love to have him do tricks for treats as a reward at the end of their session,” Kendra says.
Beyond academics, Wave excels as a source of emotional support. He intuitively responds to students’ emotions, often approaching those who are upset to offer silent comfort. “He has even walked over to an upset student and laid on the ground next to them,” Kendra recalls.
“When I walk in Wave always looks at me, licks me, and gets happy when I come. I am looking forward to walking with him.”
-Niveyah, 2nd grade
The idea of bringing a dog into the school environment was inspired by The Connor Group, a dog-friendly workplace that funds the school. With encouragement from the organization, the school’s leadership explored options and discovered the 4 Paws for Ability’s “Fabulous Flunky” program, which places dogs whose personality and temperament would not be fit for a service dog career into loving and welcoming homes.
“I put our names on the waitlist and got a call sooner than we expected – just a couple of months before we opened the doors for our first school year,” Kendra remembers. “Wave has been with us coming to school every day ever since!”
Wave has become a cornerstone of the school’s culture. His calm demeanor and attentiveness create a soothing environment for students and staff. From helping students regulate their emotions to being a motivational tool for good behavior, Wave’s presence has transformed the school’s day-to-day operations. Visitors can’t help but smile when they spot him curled up in a classroom or greeting children outside.
“I love that he is cute and fuzzy and cheers me up when I am sad. He supports people and he has his own way of saying hi and good morning to kids.”
-Spring, 3rd grade
For Kendra, Wave’s ability to comfort students is particularly special. She recalls a touching moment when a crying student in her classroom was immediately calmed by Wave’s quiet companionship. “He knows when he is needed and is in tune with our students,” she says.
As the school year progresses, Kendra is excited to see Wave forge new bonds with incoming students at the Greater Dayton School and deepen his impact on the school community. “Wave has brought happiness to so many people,” she says. “I’m looking forward to seeing him continue in his role as school dog.”
“When I was working with Ms. Kendra, he laid his head on my lap and I petted him. Then when I was crying, he snuggled me!”
-Shaunie, 5th grade
